What to bring to a first meeting

Gather these before the first meeting. Bring what you have. Six items are for a business and six are for an individual. If you own the business, both lists apply.

For a business

  1. Entity documents: formation certificate, EIN letter, and any partnership or operating agreement.

  2. The last two filed business returns, with all schedules and K-1s.

  3. The current profit and loss statement and balance sheet.

  4. Business bank and credit card statements for the current year.

  5. Payroll reports: the latest quarterly return and the year-end W-2 and 1099 copies.

  6. A list of the equipment, vehicles and property the business owns.

For an individual

  1. The last two filed individual returns, with all schedules.

  2. W-2s, 1099s and K-1s for the current year.

  3. Records for deductions: mortgage interest, property tax, charitable gifts and medical costs.

  4. Estimated tax payments made for the current year.

  5. A list of questions you want answered at the first meeting.

  6. Any IRS or state notice from the last twelve months.
